What is Smart Casual?
Smart casual sits between leisure and office: put together, but without a suit and usually without a tie. That means a shirt with a collar, a polo or fine knitwear, chinos or dress trousers, and shoes in leather or suede. An overshirt, a blouson or a sport coat can be added, but doesn't have to be.
Typical
- Oxford shirt, polo, knit polo or merino sweater
- Chinos, gabardine trousers or dark jeans
- Suede loafers, chukka boots
- Overshirt, blouson or mac coat
Better not
- Printed T-shirt, hoodie
- Sweatpants, shorts
- Running and athletic shoes
- Full suit with a tie – looks like a costume here

Swap one piece and the first outfit falls apart. Black smooth leather penny loafer instead of Dark brown suede penny loafer: Black smooth leather looks hard and out of place with light beige.
