Cardigan

Knitted jacket that opens all the way down, with buttons or a zipper. It is a soft layer over a T-shirt, polo or shirt and can replace a sport coat in calm settings. Navy or gray goes with chinos, wool trousers and jeans. The name goes back to the British Earl of Cardigan.

From the Guide

  • Navy on top is the safest choice: safe with light, gray, earth-toned and brown trousers. Navy with navy or with jeans only works with a clearly different fabric.
  • A gray sweater on top is safe with brown and with jeans. With gray, navy and light trousers it quickly becomes tone on tone.
